Island Life

Nanaimo

Nanaimo, also known as the "Harbour City" or " the Bathtub Capital of the World", Nanaimo is one of the fastest growing communities in the province. It is the second largest city of the Island boasting a population of approximately 80,000. It is the home of that favorite calorie-laden dessert 'The Nanaimo Bar'. It's claim to fame is the annual World Championship Bathtub Race. Each July, a zany spectacle of hundreds of daredevil bath tubbers take off from Nanaimo Harbour challenging the wild waters of the Georgia Strait in a 30 mile race towards Vancouver's Kitsalano Beach. Nanaimo is an industrial-based city with a long and interesting history dating back to 1852 when the Hudson's bay Company built the Bastion for protection from native raids. This is the oldest remaining structure of its type in north America. A year-round destination for holidays, business and conventions, Nanaimo is easily reached from Vancouver via B.C. Ferries, through the main land terminals at Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay. Don't make those important real estate plans without having the most current detailed information.

Qualicum Beach

With the best year round climate in Canada, Qualicum's village atmosphere has made it one of the most favored retirement areas on B.C.'s West Coast. Its clean streets and well-manicured parks and gardens reflect the local pride and hospitality.
Equipped with most of the amenities of a larger center, Qualicum Beach offers fine dining and accommodation, as well as opportunities for naturalists, art lovers, outdoor adventurers and beach combers. In April, a Spring highlight is the three-day Brant Festival, celebrating the arrival of thousands of Brant geese back to the area. Art, photography and carving exhibitions highlight this weekend of family fun. When you're looking for things to do in the summer sunshine, the warm salt water temperatures (average of 21 degrees Celsius) and long, wide sandy beaches prove an irresistible combination. Whether it's hiking, windsurfing, golfing, shopping or just relaxing, the opportunities for adventure are boundless. Play a round of golf on one of the six spectacular golf courses, visit some of the local artisans, or have an ice cream cone and watch the resident rooftop goats at the Coombs Country Market. Qualicum Beach, like Parksville, boasts the finest year-round weather in Canada, with warm sunny summers and usually mild winters. It gets an average 2047 hours of sunshine annually with an average annual precipitation of 95 cm. It's population is approximately 7000. Centrally located on the Island Qualicum Beach is approximately 2 1/2 hours from Vancouver by ferry and 2 hours to Victoria or Pacific Rim National Park

Parksville

With the best year round climate in Canada, the focus in this area is the outstanding waterfront because this is the beginning of "Beach Country". This has made Parksville one of the most visited tourist areas on B.C.'s West Coast. Home to bountiful beachcombing and exceptional sandcastle building, Parksville has become one of the favored resort and retirement havens of the Island. At low tide, you can walk barefoot out a quarter mile or more. With a shallow incoming tide, Parksville Bay is one of the safest beaches for children to swim.
